Programs



Girlstart offers a wide range of programs for girls and educators to increase opportunities in math, science, and technology. Girlstart after-school programs are hosted at Central Texas schools providing a hands-on, fun environment specifically designed to encourage girls to enroll and participate in advanced math and science classes. Girlstart partners with student organizations at the University of Texas to host Take a Girl to College Day, where our after-school participants have the chance to imagine themselves as college students.

Girlstart Summer Camp is our award winning summer day camps with themes in web-design, astronomy, forensic science, medicine, digital video production, and more engaging topics for girls to explore. Girls entering the 4th through 8th grades are eligible to attend.

Girlstart offers workshops for adults and girls. Girlstart's Saturday Workshops allow girls and their parents to participate in hands-on activities together. 1st-5th graders explore exciting new things while attending with an adult and 6th-8th graders experience Girlstart while making new friends at the same time. Girlstart's Grown up lunch and learn workshops are held the 2nd Thursday of each month from 11:30am-1:00pm featuring topics from social networking, creating a blog, learning to invest, and more! Summer camps, GrownUp workshops, and Saturday Workshops are held at the Girlstart Tech Center.

Starry Science Extravaganza offers FREE, family science fun!!! Girlstart’s science extravaganzas are held twice a year in the Austin-area. Families enjoy door prizes, experiments, games, and FREE ADMISSION!

Expanding Your Horizons is a full day program of unique 50-minute hands-on workshops in math, science technology and engineering topics. Workshops span unique themed tracks and offer girls fun, hands-on learning led by women scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Girlstart provides this unique program for up to 300 middle school girls from across Central Texas.

The Alumnae Club, open to any high school student who has participated in previous Girlstart programs, offers members leadership experience and volunteer service as they explore careers and college options. Like other Girlstart programs, the Alumnae Club offers a fun environment for girls to meet and establish new friendships.

Digital Detectives is a professional development project designed to supply teachers with equipment and training for classroom science instruction. Funded by the Texas Education Agency, Girlstart is partnering with the Texas Regional Collaboratives to provide Digital Detectives programs throughout the state of Texas.

Girlstart.com features high quality interactive curriculum for girls and provides free online lessons, career information, science experiments, and more. Girlstart.com was created solely with girls in mind to connect them to math, science and technology. The site has served over two and a half million visitors worldwide and has been recognized in numerous web and community awards.

Project IT Girl is an exclusive program for 60 high school girls throughout Austin to learn how to change the world through the use of Information Technology! Program participants apply technology to a global topic they are passionate about to educate and persuade their peers. The Project IT Girl program increases competency and confidence in science, technology, engineering, and math. IT Girls also earn college scholarships, enhance their college applications, and get paid summer internships!
