GIRLSTART TO HOST ITS FIRST EVER FREE COMMUNITY SCIENCE CAMP AT ANN RICHARDS SCHOOL DEC. 1
Exciting One-Day Event Offers Hands-On Science Fun For the Whole Family

(Austin, TX —Nov. 19th, 2007) Girlstart, an award-winning Austin-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering girls in math, science and technology, has announced its first ever Community Camp Science Extravaganza. Called “A One-Day Getaway to Geniusville,” this free event will take place from 1-4 p.m. on December 1st at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders located at 2206 Prather Lane in Austin. The event will offer kids and their families a chance to enjoy fun, hands-on science activities that range from the wonders of everyday science, to the mysteries of the stars.

Now in its tenth anniversary year, Girlstart’s highly acclaimed private camps have been opening the door for girls of all backgrounds to explore challenging subjects including information technology, algebra, website development and much more in a fun and empowering environment. With the addition of this new event, Girlstart will be bringing a sample of its signature programming to a wider audience.

“We are incredibly excited to have a chance to invite the whole community to experience what Girlstart is all about”, says Katelyn Hendrickson, Girlstart program manager. “This is a great opportunity for kids and their families to spend an afternoon experiencing the kind of hands-on, informal learning experiences that we’re famous for. Our goal is to make science, math, and technology entertaining and accessible to everyone And for one day, it’s all about science!”

The community camp will offer hands-on activities that focus on science in real life scenarios; a workshop on creating prize-winning science fair projects; and a chance to explore the stars in Girlstart’s very own planetarium. Admission is free and no registration is required.

“While our mission has always been to empower girls with skills they’ll need in the future, we also develop programs that engage the whole family,” Founder and Executive Director Rachel Muir said.
