AT UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ON FRIDAY
Austin-area high school students, in Girlstart and National Science Foundation program designed to lead
young women to information technology careers, to showcase PSAs to community representatives
(AUSTIN) - Girlstart, the Austin-based non-profit educational organization dedicated to
empowering girls in math, science, and technology, will showcase high school
students in its groundbreaking Project IT Girl program on Friday, presenting
PSAs on issues that concern the girls to Austin community representatives. its
The presentation is the culmination of the first of two week-long summer
academy programs, involving high school students from Austin-area schools who
have made a three-year commitment to Project IT Girl.
The program, funded through a National Science Foundation grant and created
by Girlstart, is designed to prepare its participants for careers in information
technology -- a curriculum that includes a focus on the practical application of
cutting-edge computer applications to real-world problems.
ABOUT GIRLSTART
Girlstart is a non-profit organization created to educate and empower girls in math, science and technology. Founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas, Girlstart has an enviable record of engaging, educating, and motivating girls to enjoy and become more proficient in mathematics and science in elementary school, middle school, and beyond. Child Magazine named the organization one of the top five programs for girls across the country. Girlstart offers a variety of educational formats designed for girls ages 9-15 through after-school programs, Saturday camps, and summer day camps. Girlstart serves a population that includes at-risk and minority girls.
