Professional Development Workshops

Girlstart Professional Development increases teacher confidence and competence in integrating informal science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) strategies into formal classroom instruction, enabling teachers to prepare students for today’s rapidly changing STEM workforce.

Girlstart Professional Development workshops are for K-8th grade teachers and administrators of all disciplines. They include:

The Girlstart Method

Learn the recipe for successfully engaging girls and nontraditional learners in STEM education. Since it’s founding, Girlstart has reached over 22,000 girls with STEM informal education and has a proven track record of girls reporting more interest in STEM subjects and careers! Over 94% of girls that attend Girlstart programs report that Girlstart sparked their interest in STEM.

The Multi Media Classroom

Bring science and math to life with technology! Learn how to integrate an intelligent board in your classroom and increase student engagement. Girlstart will demonstrate how they use the Promethean Board and student response system with the Girlstart Method to engage students in STEM learning.

Technology used: Promethean Board

Digital Detectives

Teachers will be immersed in the Girlstart Method in this hands-on workshop. Digital Detectives provides teaching strategies for inquiry based science and instruction using digital microscopes.

Technology used: Digital Microscope

Digital Game Development

Teachers will learn Girlstart’s toolbox of digital game development tools and programs we use to engage girls in game development. Participants will create their own games and leave with game development curriculum for their classrooms.

3D Modeling and Visualization

Learn how to engage your students in 3D modeling using the open source Google SketchUp ™ software. Participants will learn the basics of designing and building in 3D, moving and scaling objects, and how to add textures and 3D text to personalize their designs.

Robotics

Discover how to get more girls interested in robotics! Participants will learn why girls prefer robotic collaborations instead of competitions, and how to create robotic missions that resonate with girls of all ages.
