March Newsletter

March is one of our busiest months! Austin will be swelling with tens of thousands of people during South by Southwest, and it's always a great time to be here. If you're going to the SXSW Interactive Conference on March 8, stop by and say "hi" to Girlstart Technology & Program Coordinator Clare Richardson who will be moderating in a great panel discussion called “Go For IT! Attracting Girls to Technology".

We're also thrilled to announce that Alexis Jones, a current cast member on "Survivor: Micronesia" will be speaking about dreaming big at this year's Expanding Your Horizons on March 29 at UT. You can check out how Alexis is doing in the wild on Thursdays on CBS at 7 p.m. CST. Also, we'd like to give a big thanks to our amazing sponsor, FOX 7, who produced an inspiring new Girlstart PSA featuring some of our Girlstart girls. You'll love it!

On March 27, join us for a party at Rae Cosmetics at 26 Doors where Girlstart supporter and make-up extraordinaire Rochelle Rae will launching a new lip gloss called "Smartie" in honor of Girlstart! Proceeds from the sale of "Smarties" will benefit Girlstart.

   VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Austin Marathon Volunteers shine!

VolunteersThe brightest spot on the Austin Half Marathon route had to have been the Girlstart water stop at mile 12 in front of the Capitol! Almost 50 Girlstart volunteers came out to fill hundreds of cups of water, support the runners, and represent Girlstart on a beautiful Sunday morning. Many thanks to all the volunteers who woke up early, cheered loudly, and wore their Girlstart t-shirts with pride!

EYH Volunteer Opportunity

Expanding Your Horizons is right around the corner, and our amazing volunteers make this program run smoothly! We need approximately 100 volunteers to do everything from assist with workshops to chat with the girls during lunch. There are so many ways for you to help out;
Email sarah@girlstart.org if you are interested in being a part of this exciting day!

Calling all graphic artists!

Project IT GirlAre you ready to inspire the next generation of female computer programmers? Girlstart is looking for graphic artists and designers to volunteer their time and skills in March. High school girls in the Project IT Girl program are creating educational computer games for One Laptop Per Child, but need your help to make their games attractive through professional graphics. We need graphic art for everything from baseball players to cafeterias to science lab equipment. See the project website below for more information on Project IT Girl and our specific graphics needs.

Don’t have artistic skills? We need your help too! Many of the girls’ graphics needs may already be out there under an open license such as Creative Commons. You can help by simply searching the internet. Visit http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Project_IT_Girl to volunteer!

Visit our volunteer page to see how you and your group can get more involved with Girlstart!
