 NOTE FROM RACHEL

Fall is definitely in the air! This is one of Girlstart's favorite times of the year because students are back in the swing of things and ready to kick their brains into high gear! (We also love that special sense of anticipation for all the cool holidays to come). It's a busy time of year, but when you do what you love, it's fun to tackle new challenges!
We're especially excited about conducting two after school programs at the brand new Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. Governor Richards has been an inspiration for many of us at Girlstart over the years, and we congratulate everyone who made the school possible and we are thrilled to be a part of it.

But our after school programs don't stop there! Mendez Middle School and Burnet Middle School are also on board this Fall. Our nationally-recognized programs explore topics including rocket science, environmental engineering, pre-algebra, how computer viruses spread exponentially, using digital microscopes, and creating web pages using HTML, among many other subjects.

Now... on to High School (and beyond)! Yes, we are embarking on year two of Project IT Girl with a very special theme-- "Go Global." Our high schoolers will be learning the Python programming language and the Pygame framework in order to develop educational computer games. But that's not even the best part! Once completed, the girls will submit their computer games directly to the One Laptop Per Child Program for possible distribution to schools around the WORLD! Not only does this help teach girls to build cool games, but it encourages girls to really GO FOR IT in sharing their gifts with the world.

Saturday Camp
Girlstart Saturday Camp Registration Is OPEN !!!

Don’t miss out on the fun with math, science, and technology! Campers at iGirl Saturday camp used editing software to create their own 30 second commercial to show off to their family and friends.
“The best thing about Saturday Camp was making commercials even though I'm the shy one. I've built more confidence in myself.”
Girlstart provides a supportive and hands-on atmosphere for girls to experiment with forensic science, robots, e-cards, and more! FREE Saturday camps are held on-site at the Girlstart Tech Center in Austin. For more information and the complete camp lineup visit http://www.girlstart.org/saturday.asp

 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

volunteers

Young Women's Alliance Volunteers at Girlstart
A group of women from the Young Women’s Alliance(YWA) recently spent an evening creating posters and banners for Girlstart’s upcoming Take a Girl to College Day! Many thanks to these creative, energetic women for their hard work and dedication to inspiring girls to pursue their college dreams.

Volunteer with Project IT Girl
Girlstart is looking for women who have a background in programming to volunteer with our high school program, Project IT Girl. Youdo not need to be a professional programmer, or even have an extensive background in programming. Anyone who has taken a few programming courses in their lives will be able to contribute! Volunteers will receive an orientation and then be eligible to sign up to volunteer at one of our two after school locations. Contact Audrey if you are interested or would like more information, audrey@girlstart.org

Visit our volunteer page to see how you and your group can get more involved with Girlstart!
