 NOTE FROM RACHEL

Happy 2007, everyone!

2007 marks Girlstart's 10th anniversary and we have some fantastic birthday party plans in the works. Stay tuned in the coming months to hear more about how we'll be celebrating a decade of helping girls master math, science, and technology.

In last month's newsletter, we announced the launch of Project IT Girl, a program made possible by the National Science Foundation. We're in the process of recruiting 60 high school sophomores to prepare them for information technology careers - the deadline for registration is January 16. Visit KUT and KEYE to learn more about this exciting program! Visit http://www.girlstart.org/itgirl/ to apply.

We also have two promotions to announce - Jessica Cook, who celebrates five years with Girlstart in '07, has been promoted to Development Manager! Jessica is an integral part of our hard-working team, and the promotion reflects her important role in helping us help girls! Also, Sarah Haeglin has recently been promoted from Program Assistant to Volunteer and Event Coordinator. Sarah has been with us for three months, and has already brought great ideas and energy to Girlstart!

Finally, I should let you all know my exciting news - I'm going to be a mom! Of twins! I'm expecting a girl and a boy this February.

It's going to be an exciting year!
Rachel

Expanding Your Horizons

Now Accepting Applications for the next IT Girl!

Girlstart is currently recruiting and accepting applications for Project IT Girl, a program funded by the National Science Foundation and designed to steer high school girls toward careers in Information Technology, and to improve their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills. Project IT Girl is a very exclusive program and is only accepting 60 high school sophomore girls in the Austin area!

Here's an example of what girls are saying about Project IT Girl.

“This is really exciting for me because I love math and science. I'm going to learn a lot that I wouldn't learn just going to school and doing what everybody does.”

The IT Girl program is free and participants will be required to make a three-year commitment to attending the meetings and the summer academy. If you're interested in this exciting program, contact Zakiyyah for an application or visit the Project IT Girl website for more information. Don't miss this opportunity to join other high school sophomores for a life-changing program!

Project IT Girl is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
