 NOTE FROM RACHEL

Well, we’ve come to the end of another fantastic year at Girlstart! We’ve said goodbye to some old friends, brought some new and energetic people onto the Girlstart crew, and we’ve worked hard to help hundreds and hundreds of girls become more confident in math and science.

December’s always a good time to look back, but we’re too excited about what we’ve got planned for 2007 – our 10th anniversary year -- not to look forward!

One of our exciting new projects for the coming year – actually, the coming three years – is starting up now! It’s called Project IT Girl, and it’s the biggest program we’ve ever done for high school students. We’re recruiting high school sophomores (Class of ’09) for a three-year program, funded by the National Science Foundation, that will help girls make their mark in Information Technology. It’s a super way for girls to get a jump on a great career and learn skills that will truly help them make a difference. There’s more info in the newsletter – please let your favorite sophomore know!

December, of course, also means the holidays and shopping. BookPeople is a great local bookstore with tons of gift ideas, and there’s a bonus if you shop there Dec. 9, 10, and 16th – you get to help us! Proceeds from the gift wrapping donations on those days go to help fund Girlstart’s year-round programs.

Right now we are hiring, read more about our job openings in the newsletter and find out how to start your dream job at Girlstart! We hope you and yours have a great holiday season, and we can’t wait to see you in the New Year!

Rachel

 GIRLSTART EVENTS AND NEWS

project IT girl Project IT Girl
High School Sophomores- Here’s your chance to be an IT Girl!

Girlstart’s proud to announce the launch of Project IT Girl, which will allow a select group of sophomores to:
• learn cutting-edge technology
• solve real-life issues impacting the world
• get a head start on a career averaging $75,000 a year in Austin
• get help with college, including real-world internships and a college scholarship

Project IT Girl, funded by the National Science Foundation, is designed to steer high school girls toward careers in Information Technology, and to improve their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills. Girlstart is currently recruiting 60 high school sophomore girls in the Austin area to be a part of this program.

Once accepted into Project IT Girl, girls will attend once a week after school meetings and once a month Saturday meetings at an ACC campus. They will also attend a summer academy at the University of Texas at Austin for one week where they will use the state-of-the-art Texas Advanced Computing Center. Girlstart will also provide workshops on the college entrance process and with professional women in the IT industry.

The IT Girl program is free and participants will be required to make a three-year commitment to attending the meetings and the summer academy. If you’re interested in this exciting program, contact Zakiyyah for an application or visit the Project IT Girl website for more information. Don't miss this opportunity to join other high school sophomores for a life-changing program!

Project IT Girl is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

 A VOLUNTEER STORY

Michelle Schneider Take a Girl to College Day enjoyed a phenomenal success for the 7th year in a row! Over 100 middle school girls visited UT to learn about college life. Their day-long adventure included tours of various computer and engineering labs, lunch in a college cafeteria and introduction to dorm life. The day went smoothly thanks to special volunteers, Group Sunshine, a service-learning group from UT.

Thank you Sarah Bennett, Siomara Buenetello, Lauren Clemons, Jessica Nadeu and Tanya Williams, who prepared for hours before the event, and then expertly executed everything from campus tours to hands-on activities for girls to learn more about college life. We are grateful for all your hard work!
