 NOTE FROM RACHEL

This coming month, Girlstart is going to help more than 100 middle school girls go straight to college!

The ninth annual Take a Girl to College Day takes place on Wednesday, November 8th and we couldn't be more excited! Girlstart and ExxonMobil are teaming up to give middle school girls a preview of college life on the University of Texas at Austin campus. With encouragement from Girlstart and ExxonMobil, girls will pledge to pursue their collegiate dreams once they graduate from high school.

The day-long program has all kinds of excitement for the girls - they'll get a glimpse of a TV station and a science lab, eat in a dorm cafeteria, and each girl will be paired with a current UT student to learn more about college life firsthand!

And while we're taking a look forward to college, we're not forgetting our programs for sixth graders! We have a fun day planned for them on Friday, November 17 at our Mystery Day program.

At Girlstart, we take cookie stealing very seriously and we're going to bring in a team of girls to help us solve a stolen cookies mystery using forensic science. Like the sleuths on a number of currently-popular TV shows, the girls will put forensic science skills to work by testing the chemical and physical properties of trace mystery powders left behind at the scene of the crime!

We're looking forward to a fun November, and we're gearing up for an awesome 2007 - which I'll tell you more about next month!
Rachel

 A BOARD MEMBER'S STORY

Michelle Schneider Michelle Schneider started volunteering with Girlstart in 2001 at Girlstart’s Back to School Party. She loved it so much, she began volunteering weekly as a Program Leader for our Girlstart Club at Baty Elementary School.
“I volunteer because I believe in the mission and I like how Girlstart exposes girls to all the cool jobs out there in the world. I love Girlstart because all girls are smart and the more they hear it, the better chance of them believing in themselves,” Michelle says.
In 2005 Michelle joined the Girlstart Board of Directors. She currently co-chairs our Expanding Your Horizons program, a one-day workshop series for middle school girls that focuses on career opportunities in math, science, and technology. Michelle recently hosted a “Girlstart Friend-Raiser” fundraising event that featured a fall fashion show from Nordstrom and makeup tips from Trish McEvoy. This fun event increased awareness about Girlstart programs and volunteer opportunities and raised funds to support the Expanding Your Horizons program. Thank you, Michelle!

Michelle and her husband Jason have lived in Austin for 9 years and have two children, Alex (4 years) and Cailyn (one and a half years).
