 NOTE FROM RACHEL

One of our favorite holidays, Halloween, is here! We’re celebrating with a Halloween Science version of Saturday Camp on October 28! Girls from first through fifth grade can sign up now for the best, spookiest sticky science we can cook up in our cauldrons! And sixth through eighth grades who want to solve a mystery can point their magnifying glasses at CSI Girlstart, with signups start October 16 for the November 11 camp!

We’re also happy to welcome some wonderful new friends to Girlstart. Lesley Guthrie, Executive Director for the Governor’s Commission on Women, is the latest member of our fabulous, hard-working board of directors! We also have a new program assistant, Sarah Haegelin, to help run all the fantastic classes and camps at Girlstart. Don’t fear, though -- our former Program/Event Coordinator, Katelyn Wamsted, hasn’t gone anywhere but up! She’s done such a great job that we’ve promoted her to Program Manager!

And we’ve got some great news that proves that we’re not just about it, we’re also about IT!

We are proud to announce that the National Science Foundation has awarded Girlstart a grant for our IT Girl program! Through after-school clubs, Saturday camps, and summer programming, and paid internships we'll be empowering middle and high school girls in computer gaming and using information visualization software to solve real world problems! At Girlstart we know these are revolutionary cutting-edge technologies that will help girls stay at the front of the Information Technology pack, and now, thanks to the National Science Foundation, we get to help more girls get to the finish line first! Look for more news in the coming months about IT Girl!

 GIRLSTART EVENTS AND NEWS

Alum Club Girlstart Alumnae Club Kicks-Off Fall!
Bowling + Pizza = Lots of fun! That's the equation that started off the Alumnae Club this fall! What a fantastic way to catch up with old friends and learn all about the club.

We're gearing up for an eventful semester with service projects and college information night. The Alumnae Club is open to any high school student who is an alumna or former volunteer with Girlstart. Our aim is to build leadership skills, cultivate an interest in math and science careers, and, of course, have fun! Please contact Dita Niyogi at dita@girlstart.org for more information.

The Girlstart Alumnae Club is sponsored by the Sooch Foundation.

 A GIRL'S STORY

Saturday Camp 2006 Girls and their parents unlocked the secrets of herbology and sticky science experiments in Girlstart’s Hermione’s Science Sampler Saturday camp. Girlstart’s free parent/daughter Saturday camps provide a supportive and empowering environment in which parents and daughters complete fun hands on activities. Here is what some campers had to say was the best thing about Saturday camp:
"We got to do lots of things I’ve never done." Camper – Age 7

"I liked everything." Camper – Age 11

"I liked the chemistry part." Camper – Age 9

"I liked making the dragons breathe. It was very cool and smelly." Camper – Age 9
