 NOTE FROM RACHEL

Hot enough for ya? The mercury’s hitting triple digits, and our Summer Camp has been even hotter! Your teachers are getting a well-deserved break for the next month, but here at Girlstart, we never stop!

Our first camp of the summer, Making the Video, was a great success – and thanks to KEYE-TV, people all over Austin got to see the awesome work our campers did as they teamed up to make their own music videos.

We also showed our campers how to use cutting-edge 3D technology as they transformed their bedrooms into Dream Spaces.

In July, campers learn about great math, science and technology careers from a group of amazing women, and travel to Hogwarts to learn magical science inspired by our favorite wizard, Hermione Granger!

We’re also taking another brand of magical science across the state with our Digital Detectives program! Thanks to funding from the Texas Education Agency, we’ve taken digital microscopes to schools in El Paso and Waco. Later this summer, we venture to Houston and Brownsville to train teachers about encouraging students to explore a world beyond what they can see with their own eyes.

And don’t forget – the school year will be here before you know it, and we’re gearing up for it with a full slate of fall Saturday camps and our after school programs!

Stay cool!
Rachel

 A TEACHER'S STORY

Girlstart has held two successful science teacher mentor trainings for Digital Detectives in El Paso and Waco, providing inquiry based science instruction. The science teacher mentors will host similar trainings in their areas, sharing the knowledge they learned from Girlstart. A teacher gave feedback at the end of the training:
"I really enjoyed learning about this type of microscope. I just learned about a WebQuest and wanted to implement it into my class next year. This is awesome. I can think of several types of WebQuests my students will have to do involving using the microscope and putting a project together with pictures from the scope. Thank you."
The Digital Detectives program is funded by the Texas Education Agency and has the potential to train over 1,000 teachers across the state of Texas.
