 NOTE FROM RACHEL

Winter is winding down, and spring is in the air! March brings with it the promise of new life, and there's no better place in Austin to dream of new beginnings than Girlstart!

This month, we will show nearly 100 area girls the door to a promising future at our 8th annual Take a Girl to College Day. Girls are treated to a whirlwind adventure while they visit UT classes, participate in engineering labs, make friends with current students, tour the dorms, and have lunch alongside other college students at the dorm cafeteria. The day culminates in a moving moment: the girls make an official pledge to return as real college students. It's a day full of inspiring new experiences and new ideas!

Where Take a Girl to College Day leaves off, our new Expanding Your Horizons conference begins! Girlstart's one day conference introduces girls to the career opportunities awaiting them. Girls spend an action packed day sampling a variety of careers from veterinary science to aeronautics. Each career is presented in a hands on, mind blowing, full force format. Expanding Your Horizons will show girls a brand new way to see the power of math, science, engineering and technology!

So as the redbuds and bluebonnets begin to appear this month, be reminded that at Girlstart, exciting futures are bursting into bloom too!
Rachel

Michelle Schneider
Michelle Schneider
We'd like to extend a hearty thanks to our Expanding Your Horizons event chairs, Michelle Schneider and Melodie Summersett, for their expertise in procuring resources, managing the budget and guiding the team.

We couldn't put the conference together without the core volunteers from Applied Materials' Women's Professional Development Network. We'd like to thank the team members, especially Deb Wilson, for their diligence in every aspect of the planning---from monitoring the quality of the workshops to managing the flow of the conference. Girlstart appreciates you!

 A TEACHER'S STORY

Irene Morales is the Student Advocate Counselor and a teacher at Westview Middle School, one of the five schools that hosts Girlstart's Aiming for Algebra program. Irene has been a campus coordinator with Girlstart since 1999 and continues to support Club Girlstart.

Irene's daughter participated in Girlstart when she was in the 7th grade and Irene attributes much of her daughter's success in math and science to Girlstart. When asked why she supports Girlstart, Irene says,
"I've always believed in girls and I have a very strong commitment to making the world better for girls. The world has been a good place for males for a long time, and I believe we can make it better for females too."
Irene's dedication includes Girlstart and beyond - by starting Mana Sisters, a club for girls at Westview, Irene makes sure to continue her support of girl's empowerment!
