Up, up and away! Come and make a kite with Girlstart at the Violet Crown Spring Festival at Brentwod Park from 11:00am - 6:00pm. If you can't make it out today you can try making this kite at home.
Materials:
* Twine or string
* Tape
* Large Garbage Bag
* 2 straight wooden sticks or dowels 90cm and 102cm
* Scissors
* Small Hand Saw or Sharp Knife (Ask permission and have parental guidance)

How to:
1. Make a cross with the two sticks, the shorter (90cm) stick placed horizontally across the longer (102cm) stick.

2. Tie the two sticks together with the string or twine. Try to keep the sticks at right angles to each other.

3. Cut or saw a notch (deep enough for string to fit in to) at each end of both sticks.
4. Cut a piece of string long enough to stretch around the kite frame.
5. Make a small loop with the string in the top notch and fasten it by wrapping the sting around the stick. Stretch the string through the cross-piece notch (fasten with tape if needed), and make another loop at the bottom notch (fastening the same way). Stretch the string up the other side back to the top. Finish by wrapping the string around the top.
* The string should be taut but not so tight as to bend the sticks.

6. Lay the sail material (garbage bag) flat and place the frame on top. Cut around the frame, leaving about 1 in for a margin. Fold edges over the string frame and tape so the bag is tight.

7. Cut a piece of string about 122cm long and tie ends to each loop (the string will NOT be tight).
8. Tie a loop just above the cross intersection in the string you just attached. (This loop will be where you attach the flying line)

9. Add a tail!!! Tie ribbon about every 10cm along length of string. Experiment with the tail length. Stability of your kite can be improved by the use of bows and a flexible tail.
10. Decorate!
