Remembering Dr. Sally Ride

On November 16, 2010, Girlstart was honored to welcome Dr. Sally Ride to Austin for a conversation about why STEM education was important for girls. Girls from Wooldridge Elementary in Austin and Mitchell and Williams elementaries in Georgetown joined us on the day, as well as girls from the LaGrange community. In addition, many girls from across the region attended with their moms (or their dads). We had thought that this luncheon would be mostly be of interest to adults that remembered Dr. Ride's groundbreaking work, her team, and her spirit. But we were wrong. We could have filled the room with just girls, girls who know why and how Dr. Ride changed the equation for them and for all of us.

Dr. Ride shared her experiences in space, some amazing photographs, as well as her thoughts about why learning in and through STEM is important for girls and for everyone. More than one person came up to us and said that it was a dream come true to listen to Dr. Ride in person. And it was. We remain grateful to Dr. Ride for her work and her inspiration and for sharing a little bit of her incredible stamina with us in November 2010. We will always remember and be inspired by your achievements!
