Girls In STEM Presenter Spotlight

Charmaine San Jose Hinahon

Name:  Charmaine San Jose Hinahon

Company: Life Technologies

Title: Scientist III in Research & Development

April 17, 2010, just a few minutes prior to us beginning our first workshop for the day.  Shown (left to right) are: Angela Burrell, Lesslie Beauchamp, Diana Batten, Charmaine San Jose Hinahon, Anita Banh, and Angie Cheng.

Girlstart: Was there a person in your life that encouraged you in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)? If so, please tell us a little bit about how she/he encouraged you:

Charmaine: In 4th-6th grade, my teachers and parents encouraged me to participated in elementary school science fair events. My projects were simple, using whatever extra materials we had in the house. Often times I was growing something (tomatoes, onions, flowers) under stressful conditions, and my projects took several weeks if not months to perform. But, the exciting part for me was watching the seeds or seedlings grow. Especially watching onions grow in my closet with minimal light was sooo exciting.

After School Week 6

The Effects of Oil Spills

Girlstart’s environmental scientists were on the job this week! The girls created a model of an oil spill and observed the effects it could have on birds by dipping a single feather into the spill. They tried to clean the feather with Dawn dish soap and talked about the difficulties that environmental scientists face during large oil spills in the wild. Then, they experimented with three different cleaning methods for the water as well. The girls used spoons to try and skim the oil out off the water, cotton balls to absorb the oil, and Dawn dish soap to disperse the oil. After their attempts, the girls discussed what worked best to remove the oil from the water.
